Take Your Workouts Outdoors this Summer: Tips from a Personal Trainer

Published in Dining

Summer is the perfect time to take some of your training outdoors!

As a Personal Trainer and group fitness instructor, I spend most of my workouts indoors, especially in the colder months. But once the sun hits, I like to spend my weekends outdoors as much as possible!

My idea of a perfect sunny, Saturday afternoon is getting out on the water! Kayaking is my favourite water sport, but I really enjoy all types. The North Shore really has the best spots for water sports. However, I live in Surrey, BC, so if I’m coming to North Shore, I like to make a full day of it!

And if I’m making a full day, it means I need to start with a protein-packed breakfast that will keep me full, and give me enough energy to conquer the rest of my fun-filled day. Starting with a smoothie is my favourite, as I can take it with me on the go. My choice? I usually hit up the Booster Juice at Park Royal Shopping Centre for the Strawberry Storm. It’s perfect for summer, with berries (hello, energy boost!), whey protein and yogurt. Sometimes I’ll add the “energy” booster for an extra kick… because sometimes you just need it.

Once I’m done, it’s time to shop! I know I said I was coming for a day of water sports, but I can’t step foot in Park Royal without shopping for sportswear. My top favourite items usually come from Lululemon, Nike, and RYU. These brands have great technical clothing, and awesome athleisure looks for when I’m not at the gym.

But it’s not time to go kayaking just yet. As a Personal Trainer, I know how important it is to prepare my body to perform. Kayaking needs both muscular strength and endurance, so I incorporate a few tools into my workout like resistance bands, the RIP trainer, TRX, and the Hyperice foam roller.

Luckily, I don’t have to go far and can do this warm-up workout at the Steve Nash Park Royal Sports Club. With top of the line equipment, towel service, steam rooms, and saunas, it’s easy to hit your fitness goals (and do it in style!).

To re-fuel before kayaking, I like to make sure I have something that’s quick and re-nourishes me from my workout. Nowadays, it’s pretty easy to find healthy food on the go. Look for wraps, or salads that include protein, lots of greens, and complex carbohydrates like quinoa or beans. My go-to is the Metaboost Wrap (with chicken for added protein) at Freshii.

Now it’s finally time to hit the water! I love to Kayak on the North Shore. It’s such a beautiful, scenic location. If you don’t have your own gear, there are loads of companies nearby that offer lesson, rentals, and tours! And if kayaking isn’t for you, many also offer lessons for other water sports, like paddleboarding, which is a great way to improve balance, upper body and core strength… while taking in the amazing view, of course!

Pro tip? Be sure to grab a waterproof phone case while you’re shopping (a wet phone isn’t good for taking the best selfie while on the water)!

So what are you waiting for? Get to over to North Shore this summer!
